Meet the artists: HAU Berlin & teatru.spălătorie

with Nicoleta Esinencu: director, playright; Nora Dorogan: cultural worker; Jana Penz: production manager

The international production house HAU Hebbel am Ufer, Berlin, with its three stages HAU1, HAU2 and HAU3 produces and presents current artistic positions at the intersection of theater, dance and performance. HAU4 is the digital stage. For this platform, HAU produces projects that are developed specifically for the online realm. In addition, music, visual arts and discourse events are fixed components of the program. Without a permanent ensemble, international co-productions, festivals and projects of the Berlin and (inter)national theater and dance scene are developed and shown here. Every summer, HAU hosts "Tanz im August," one of Europe's most renowned dance festivals. Important cornerstones of the program are a contemporary repertoire with regular revivals as well as thematic festivals and focal points.

teatru-spălătorie is an independent artistic initiative that emerged in 2010 out of the need to consistently create artistic productions that would critically reflect, and question the issues facing contemporary Moldovan society and beyond; it is a platform for the promotion, in Moldova, of art with a politically-assumed discourse.
From 2010 to 2017 they also managed a space that became a meeting place for various marginalized communities; where feminist groups and the LGBTQI+ community organized discussions, workshops and parties. It was a place that hosted discussions on social justice, anti-racism and social racism.
In 2017 teatru-spălătorie gave up that space and continued as a political theater collective.

During these years the teatru-spălătorie produced a number of shows and performances including Clear History (2012), Moldova Independentă. Erată (2012), Ficțiune (2012), Dragă Moldova, putem să ne pupăm puțin de tot? (2013), American Dream (2014), Кстати о погоде (2016), Life (2016), Recviem pentru Europa (2018), Evanghelia după Maria (2018), Abolirea Familiei (2019), Simfonia Progresului (2022).

They have invited performances from Poland, Romania, Germany and the UK. They also created a residency programme. The artists invited in this residency were: Bogdan Georgescu, Wojtek Ziemilski, Jessica Glause, David Schwartz and Anetta Mona Chișa & Lucia Tkaciova, Alice Monica Marinescu.
