Anyone wanting to describe the political situation in the Middle East is used to talk about it simply as “The Situation”. During the past years many people dealing with the background of this “Situation” came to Berlin. Once, the conflict kept their lives apart, but in the German capital their lives interwine. Resident director at Maxim Gorki Theatre Yael Ronen put her most recent play development to a German language course in the neighbourhood Neukölln. The students are connected through the fact that all of them arrived in Berlin in the past years. They came from Syria, where there is an ongoing war since 2011. From Israel and Palestine, where the political as well as the social climate gets more violent from day to day. Considering this, nobody is surprised that in the class of German teacher Stefan grammar is the smallest problem. Yael Ronen and the actors and actresses from Syria, Palestine and Israel tackle the paradox reencounters of their “neighbours” and deal as well as with the ghosts of their past.

Press excerpts

“A brave, blunt theatre evening – full of bitter self-irony, sharp wordplays and far off from all (self-)pity platitudes.”

Elke Vogel, Frankfurter Neue Presse, Germany
